(IS:4031 2019 METHODS OF PHYSICAL TESTS FORHYDRAULIC CEMENT (PART 4) Determination of Consistency of Standard Cement Paste)
The Consistency of cement test is performed to determine the amount of water content that is to be added in cement to attain Standard consistency or normal consistency of cement.
This method covers the procedure to determine the quantity of water required to produce a cement paste of standard consistency.
Purpose of Consistency test
The Consistency of cement test is performed to determine the amount of water content that is to be added in cement to attain Standard Consistency or Normal Consistency of cement and is represented by the (33-37)mm depth from top, of plunger in cement test mould.
Vicat Apparatus
The parts of Vicat Apparatus ( IS: 5513) with plunger of 10 mm diameter, are shown below:
Test procedure
Weigh about 400g of cement and mix it with a known quantity of water. The time should be between 3 to 5 minutes.
Fill the Vicat Mould with paste and level it with a trowel.
Lower the plunger gently till it touches the cement surface in the mould.
Release the plunger and allow it to sink into the paste. Note the reading on the gauge.
The process is repeated to get more readings with addition of variated quantities of water until the reading on the gauge is 5 to 7mm.
Test Record Format for Clément Consistency Test
Amount of water added in cement ,to penetrate the Vicat plunger up to a depth of 5-7mm from the bottom of the Vicat mould or 33-35mm from top of the Vicat Mould is calculated in percent, and this percentage is defined as Consistency of Cement Paste
