General

IS: – 2386 (Part – I) 2016 Method of test for aggregates for Concrete – Particle Size and Shape (Gradation / Sieve analysis)

The specifications divide the sand in Zone I to Zone IV. Zone I–(Coarse to fine sand) Zone I to III are suggested for the Concrete works.

Fineness Modulus of sand is a number which represents the mean size of the particles in sand. It is calculated by performing sieve analysis with standard sieves (4.75 mm to 150 micron). The cumulative percentage retained on each sieve is added and divided by 100  to gives the value of fineness modulus

Fineness Modulus Test Format

Optimum value of density and other parameters are obtained when FM is 2.8.
